Potato seeds were last year crop grown in next door by a friend. Planted at Easter - tops are green - plants were sprayed with Sevin to reduce potatoe bugs - no insects on plants now. Decided to begin havest as we were hungry for fresh potatoes. The smaller ones to not have the grey spot inside. The spot appears the size of a nickel or a quarter. They taste just fine and no side effects were noted after eating. A friend stated the spot is due to fast growth and that eventually this grey spot would become hollow and also that a red potato with shis condition does not store well. I also planted 3 other late varieties bu have not dug any yet - will they also have grey center spots?

I do not know what causes this defect. I have bought them that way, and I have seen them pulled from my grandparents garden that way. We always cut it out an ate them. If you are concerned, you might take one to your county extension agent or ask him/her to come out and look at your crop.
