The most famous or at least most recognizable modern day commentator would have to be John Madden. If you look at the entire history of football, it would be a close race between Madden and Howard Cosell.

For Pro Football, In this day and age it's got to be John Madden but for all time it's Howard Cosell
In College... It's the the man... KEITH JACKSON noone else comes close

Geez, I cannot believe I can't remember his name, but the guy who always used to say "fuummbblleeee" and "ole' mo has on a (team color's) jersey now". He did the rose bowl for years and years, retired once, came back, and retired again this past season.
The fact that I cannot remember his name should not dissuade you from arguing for him...I am very bad with names.
I would argue his fame because for 30 some-odd years he was the voice of College Football, and as big as the NFL is, College football is still king in many parts of the country, and this guy was a mainstay on ABC.
