Before you fly you need to try to understand what the plane will do and what movements and noises are a regular part of flying and not an indication of a problem.

1. When the plane is on the ground at the gate it is usually pushed back from the gate by a tug and you may hear noises from that. You may also hear noises when luggage is being loaded and the bottom doors are closed.

2. Before the plane flies the wings have to be adjusted for more lift and you may hear noises sounding like a drill or saw as the wing flaps are extended. That's also normal. Then you may hear the sounds of the engines revving up.

3. The plane will roll down the runway and pick up speed and you will probably be pushed back into your seat as the engines are very powerful.

4. When the plane clears the ground you may hear the sound of the wheels being retracted and the bottom doors being closed. After a short while you may hear the drilling sound again as the wings are positions for flight.

5. If you are flying on a partly or mostly cloudy day, you will feel the flight get rough as the plane goes through the clouds and that is because the moisture in the clouds causes the engines to run roughly for a few seconds, and then smooth out after clearing all of the clouds.

6. The flight should be smooth and airlines always make it a point of finding the altitude which is smoothest and they also steer around and away from bad weather.

7. When the plane is about ready to land you may feel it slow a bit and also hear the wings start to adjust and the landing gear door open.

You flight is likely to have very little turbulence unless there are severe thunderstorms in the area.

Taken this flight from Houston three times - about nine hours each time. Try to nap, bring an iPod w/music & downloaded books to listen to, a PSP & movies/games if you've got one) & some reading material. Get a prescription for Ambien or take a Benadryl or Dramamine so you can sleep through much of the trip.

I've only had one time where there was any turbulence & it was pretty minor. The pilot knows where the turbulence & can fly around it or go through the least rough part.

The flights almost always return late in the day or at night so you will be able to sleep during the return flight. This is a L-O-N-G flight. You will have so much fun and Hawaii is such a marvelous place to visit that you will find yourself making plans for your next trip the day after you get home! Have fun!

It's a long flight..about 6 hours..I took it in two days..flew in to Phoenix and then to Maui..have you ever been to Hawaii?..our flight was great and they fly way up above the clouds..take some benedryl to help you relax..there are movies on the plane which will keep you occupied and they serve a meal because of the length of the trip..but wow what a wonderful vacation..I am planning on going to Maui next year and can't wait..I had a wonderful time several years ago and can't wait to go back..the plane trip is just that.

Go to your doctor and let him/her know about your concern. Ask him/her to prescribe something to ease your anxiety. A coworker of mine recently flew for the first time and was a wreck. Her doctor prescribed valume (I think that's what it was) and she said it worked great.
By the way, you have nothing to fear. Flying continues to be the safest way to travel. Have fun in Hawaii!

Take a boat....swim. Ok....here's the deal. I hate plane travel. If you're of age, get drunk enough to just fall asleep.

Don't sleep before your flight so that you can just sleep the whole way.

Would you rather walk, or swim?
