Nice question. A hybrid is a merger of two systems. You can have a petrol car and now you can have a hybrid meaning a car that runs on petrol and gas. You also get hybrids in animals - when two different animals that can successfully mate and produce offspring - that is also called a hybrid - I believe they have done it with donkey and some other animal - but for the life of me I can't remember what the other animal was or what they call the offspring - I think it is an a.s.s - maybe someone else reading this can tell you, but anyway - that basically is a hybrid.

I've often wondered if "hybrid" isn't a sort of corruption of "high breed". A hybrid is a new member of a species (car, cow, corn, etc.) that is brought about through the novel combination of characteristics of other members of the species, or the interjection or addition of a characteristic from outside the species, or the development of new technology. The key concept is novel or new, representing a radical departure from all that has gone before - a new way of thinking, a new paradigm.

In biology, hybrid has three meanings.
The first meaning is of crosses between two animals or plants of different taxa. Hybrids between different species within the same genus are sometimes known as interspecific hybrids or crosses. Hybrids between different sub-species within a species are known as intra-specific hybrids. Hybrids between different genera are sometimes known as intergeneric hybrids.

The second meaning of "hybrid" is crosses between populations, breeds or cultivars of a single species. This second meaning is often used in plant and animal breeding.

The third meaning is in molecular biology; see Hybridization (molecular biology).

it is where somebody has taken two or more different items and redesigned them into a new/better version of something we already have, like the hybrid car, they took the old gas guzzling, pollution emitting motor and merged it with an electric motor to increase fuel mileage and cut down on emissions. Hope that answers your question.
