I would say that my stepfather is, he's hairy enough to be the missing link, but he's still human (technically an animal). Since he probably don't qualify I would have to say that the Quagga was the ugliest animal I have ever come across. I've only come across pictures, but it was like an antelope mixed with an early breed of elephant. Google it.

While some of the deep sea critters like angler fish, or gulper eels look totally alien and bizarre, and others like leeches or centipedes may give people the heebie jibblies, I find that the ugliest critters are the ones that look almost human, but are not quite right, and so they fall into that 'uncanny valley' where they are more disturbing than something completely alien.

So for me, the ugliest critters are:

Red Uakari Monkey http://www.animalinfo.org/image/cacacalv...

Paris Hilton http://www.thehiltonfiles.com/wp-content...

and the big, big ugly - the Chinese Golden Monkey http://cgi.uc.edu/labs/bing_su/projects....

Well ,this question said the ugliest animal ( I ) had ever come across. I never met a mole rat. Let me tell you about SAM the cat;
Sam belonged to the nastiest neighbors any one could have.
Dirty ignorant, half dressed theiving kids, no parental influence, way too much drinking Morning to night.
Sam was an unneutered male, he had a head like a Lion and a long skinny ,woodchuck scarred, worm infested, flea bitten, body!
Sam also had a resporatory problem so that he weized and boogas ran down his eyes and out his nose, all green and yellow.
Sam used to climb the loft of my greenhouse in the winter for warmth and I would here him above me in the loft weezing and sneezing and coughing.
The folks who owned my greenhouse range and I would feed Sam good quality food and hope he would respond. It was not good enough, one cold winters night we found a scrawny, flea bitten, body frozen outside the greenhouse boiler room door.
We buried him with honors.....
Several weeks went by, and then one night while potting cuttings up I heard a noise, something like sniffling and weezing, I then heard it again, I waited, Yup, sure enough was the familiar weezing of Sam coming from the loft.
WHY? HOW? surely not a ghost or spirit, yet as clear as day there was Sam's weezing in the loft.
I flew out of the greenhouse and hammered on the owners door. Help! I cried! I hear Sam, please come quick! My friend climbed the loft, and to our amazement there sat SAM, booghas, snots, skinny, fleas. worms and all! But we buried Sam???
Next morning we pick axed through the now frozed ground to Sams grave.
Sure enough, Sam was Alive, some how in this world a cat just as ulgy and tiger striped, mangey furred, snotty nosed cat had found his way to our door and frozen to death in that fateful night.
WE NAMED HIM "SON OF SAM" and put up a marker for him.
Sam, well he lived on , Snotty, scabie, woodchuck scared, flea bitten, nasty for another whole year before his death rattle breathing could no longer be heard in my greenhouse loft. TRUE STORY, Bugsie Spell check just shut down, so sorry!

Strangest would be a coati mundi. Ugliest would be an inside-out holstein calf born on our farm 55 years ago, (it didn't survive)

Sam, the world's ugliest dog. He's a hairless breed anyway, but when he went blind in his extreme old age... yeow.

Here's a link with his photo:
