You can see them from NYC you just won't see as many as you would other places. I once saw a meteor from the quad in front of Low Library on Columbia's morningside campus. I could only see about 5 or 6 stars, but I also saw a meteor there!

Best meteor watching strategy: find a field of view with no bright lights in it, lay on your back with 1 or 2 others looking different directions. Often people can point out streaks to others before they end.

Get as far away from city lights as possible, but if you are stuck you are stuck and you will still see a few even from a rooftop on the Upper West side of Manhattan!

"ny" as in New York City? If that's so, forget it, you'll never see 'em.
