i am remodeling a bath and the floor is old wood, not that nice and just to save $ right now, I am thinking of painting it. Has anyone ever done this and with what kind of paint? Anything over the paint? Thanks.

This is just a temporary fix until we can properly tile it. The wood is an old outdoor porch and would not look that great refinished. We already tried that in another room of the house.

I just painted over 2 plywood floors with porch paint - it was marked interior/exterior. I found the paint at Home Cheapo (home depot)
I prepped the floor by cleaning it very well - if your floor has a varnish on it you may want to give it a light sanding first.
I used a brush on the edges and rollered the rest - 2 coats. It looks great and was the cheapest alternative.
If i'd had more time I'd of tried a bit of creativity w/ a border design.

I just did our floors, hire it out if you can afford it. If you decide to tackle it yourself, there are a couple different sanders you can rent. There are drum sanders and pad sanders. If the floor is in bad shape a drum sander is very aggressive and will take it down to good wood fast. BUT the drum sander can be tricky, stop to long in one spot and you get a nice gouge fast. The pad sander is more of a touch up for floors that are in decent shape but just need the top couple thousandsth of an inch removed. Even with 36 grit paper on a pad sander you won't be able to tear up your floors. Pushing a sander around all day for several days straight will wear you out. It would be best to move out for this project for a few weeks to do the whole house in one shot if you can.

My aunt painted a pattern on a kitchen floor, a checkered pattern, using two different paint colors. (to look like tile
I have painted my back porch floor.
Just use a good polyurethane finish after you are through, and make sure it is compatable with the paint.

Being a small area, you should sand it first and then apply a neutral or slightly tinted polyurothane finish on it to show the grain of the hardwood. This type of finish should last for a good while if you aren't continually soaking it.

You will be depreicating your home value when you paint it.
Just do the work and fix it right.
It is not more expensive, it just requires some effort.
Sand the floor, and re finish it with clearcoat.
