The humbuckers on the les paul provide a warmer tone compared to the single coils in the strat, but the playability of the strat far exceeds the Gibson. The Gibson neck is somewhat "chunky", which has always slowed me down. I still own a 1976 Gibson Firebird and a Explorer, which are a lot of fun, but I have three telecasters (1972, 1975, and 1983) and two strats (and I'm currently shopping for another mid 70s strat). Both are good guitars, but there's nothing like a Fender....

it really depends on what you are looking for in a guitar.
Stratocasters vary in style and woods, which as much as people would like to beg to differ, this make the sound different.
styles vary from vintage stratos to american classics. Then Fender has also designed Stratocasters after musicians customs stratocasters.
The same can apply to the les paul. Les Pauls also varry in woods, styles, and sounds, and cuts.
I would suggest going to a guitar center and testing them out to see which one you prefer.

Depends on what sound you want - a friend of mine only uses Fenders but has designed a guitar for another company ,said company now markets this guitar as his "signature model" - it has the colour-scheme of a NY taxi LOL.

Both are classic axes.......how you chose between the two would depend on what your into, and what your going for.......classicly...the gibson.....for the appeal of a bad *** guitar, that is acessable(even if it is a knock-off) to anyone....gotta go with the stat.
