My wife is 7 months pregnant and is suffering from really bad heartburn. She has tried tagament, Rolaids and other over the counter drugs - to no avail!
Sure, there are much worse things she could have right now - but it is really making her life miserable and keeping her up at night.
Anyone have any helpful advice?

There are a few things, but don't take the OTC drugs unless you cunsult a doc, and even then I would avoid them if at all possible. They can help symptoms temporrarally, but make them worse in the long run.

Avoid foods that have a high fat or acid content, especially before lying down. Tomatoe products like spegetti sauce and pizza are especially irritating. Also, anything greasy, fried or fast food stay away from.

Also, try not to eat anything an hour before bed unless it is like, crackers or veggies with no spices. Even some fruits like oranges can be very irritating. Have your wife sit up for at least 1/2 an hour after all meal. Eat smaller amounts more often, instead of a couple of big meals.

Also, a lot of people assume dairy will be soothing, but it can also cause heart burn.

I know this doesn't leave much. But if she gets extreamly uncomfortable, go to the doc. I had really severe heart burn, and then it turned into terrible pains in my right side. It turned out that I had gallstones, which are very common in pregnant women. It was TERRIBLE! Luckily my husband knew how to be understanding and helped me through it.

I'm 21 weeks pregnant. I've always had heartburn but starting last week my heartburn became more frequent and just terrible. I believe it is associated with pregnancy. They say your baby is going to have alot of hair if you have bad heartburn throughout your pregnancy. Also in the beginning of my pregnancy I was super constipated and it sucked. I only get constipated once in awhile now.

TUMS TUMS and more TUMS. I had the worst heartburn when I was pg with my daughter. The whole pregnancy was nothing but heartburn. I guess it was pay back for not having morning sickness.

Also sleeping with your head elevated helps keep the acid down, and no spicy foods and such esp. right b/4 bed. Is she taking iron pills? If so that waill cause it too and you have to wait 2 hrs after you take the iron pill b/4 you can take tums. Other than that she will have to suffer. I did, but I got through it. Congrats on the new baby and good luck.

My sister swore by papaya - dried or fresh. Me, I have found that Tums are the way to go. I keep a bottle of Tums and a bottle of water on my bedside table - because I wake up at night feeling like the creatures in ALIEN with that caustic saliva - and I carry them in my purse and car as well. ENO works during the day, too (Alka Seltzer a no-no as it contains aspirin). I avoid spicy/greasy stuff and eat a lot of very small meals. I also drink through a straw - don't know why but it helps me.

She's not alone and it's sweet of you to take an interest on her behalf.

Unfortunately, because she is pregnant, her options are very limited. The only two things that would help my heartburn were clear soda, like Sierra Mist or 7Up and TUMS... berry flavored in a huge bottle we bought from Costco. I carried that bottle everywhere. Also, have her watch what she eats and how late she eats and she should not lay down right after eating.

If all else fails, it would be advised for her to see her OBGYN and see if they can't do something for her.

Good Luck... and sweet of you to reach out on Answers for a solution for your wifes ailment.

Ooh that sucks. My pregnanyc heartburn came in at 6 months and went away at the end of my 8th month. The only things that is safe to take while pregnant is tums and rolaids. She can try eating really plain food, sleep proped up, eat slow and not right before sleeping.

Congratulations BTW!

Tell her to talk to her OB. They'll probably give her a prescription or refer her to some pills. Most are completely safe and help a lot. She shouldn't eat any spicy or fried foods. For some reason any tomato based sauce always gave me heartburn, even ketchup.

Drink milk. And if she hasn't tried it yet, Zantac150 worked for me,and it's safe to take while pregnant.

People say if you have a lot of heartburn, your baby will have lots of hair though, lol.

Limit fat intake, no spicy foods, no carbonated beverages, don't eat late in the day. Also eating smaller meals more frequently helps.

And raising the head of your bed can help. Or use more pillows to sleep in a raised postion. Don't lie flat.
