they don't mean the same thing. slim chance, there is at least a possibility of it happening. fat chance, well it means no chance at all, find something else.

A slim chance is a minimal possibility, and is usually referred to in a serious tone. A fat chance is usually referred to sarcastically.
"There is a slim chance for peace between Lebanon and Israel right now."
"You? Date a supermodel? Fat chance of that happening."

I think when people say "fat chance" they're mostly being sarcastic, like, "yea, sooo likely THAT'll happen!" but when they say "slim chance" they really mean what they say.
but most of the time, they mean the same thing.

"Fat chance" is said sarcastically. Therefore, it means the opposite of what is being said - slim chance.
