Approximately 2.25 miles along the lake edge. You have really nice sidewalks the entire way. The planetarium is about another .25 mile from there. The sidewalks beyond the planetarium turn to beach.
I like to run that way mornings. At about 5:15 the sun is just up and there are quite a few joggers and cyclists. Any of the downtown hotels, though expensive, are nice and are in walking distance from the pier.
I recomend Carson's for steak, Bubba Gump's for seafood (on the pier), and a little place called Tuto Pronto for gourmet Italian deli foods. An amazing place! Ohhh, and lets not forget the greatest pizza in all creation...Giordono's...oh God that is like a climax in a box--and they deliver!
Be sure to take the kids to Millenium Park to see the Chrome Kidney Bean and the video statue that spits water at people.
I could go on and on about Chicago, I love the place.

Depending on the age of the kids ...you may also want to check out The Museum Of Science & Industry [ use public transportation, it's not within walking dist , but Chicago has the BEST public transportation ]
This museum has lots for kids to do , its much more interactive , kids can only take so much of not being able to touch. The Museum of S & I is more 'KID FRIENDLY' !
Also @ the Field Museum see the 'Lions of Tsavo'
These are the same lions ,from the [based on a true story] movie 'The Ghost & The Darkness' with Val Kilmer & Michael Douglas [ exhibit is better if you've seen the movie]

It's a pretty long walk between Field Museum and Navy Pier. However, there is a water taxi between the two. It's $6 for adults and $3 for kids.
Here's the site:

that is long walk especially w young kids. There are double decker busses driving all over I'm sure one will travel between Navy Pier and Field Museum. cabs are everywhere, when you find hotel, they will have much information on inner-city travel.

If you're with little kids, I probably wouldn't hoof it. For a healthy adult, it's not a bad little hike, but with kids it might be a stretch for them. Take a cab.
As far as a good place to stay with kids, the ones are or near Michigan Ave. are more ritzy. I'd look for something in the west part of the Loop.

Its a little far for walking distance but is still doable. They have little boats that will take you back and fourth for a couple bucks. They are in front of the Shedd Aquarium. I use them all the time.
