Don't worry about the name. Call them whatever you want! Both lightning bug and firefly are perfectly acceptable, it just depends on where you live. They are actually a beetle in the family Lampyridae. Bio-luminescence is right about how they glow. I put a pretty cool website in the source section below that talks all about lightning bugs. They light up by using bioluminescence, this is a common usage and doesn exemplify that their real name is fir-fly, not lightning bug.

what they said, get a jar and catch them to make a fasinating night light, its fire flys lightning bugs, its the same thing..its me and my kids favorite hot summer night past times...

They are called fire-flys, and they light up using bioluminescence.
