Here's a list of the best brands in the world used by best of the heavy metal bands

ESP
Jackson
Fender
basically any type of these three (they come at diffrent costs) would be great (some Yamaha's are good as well but I don't like'em personally)

Rock man! You've gotta go with the juice dude. There really is no other beginner guitar that the Fender Squire. You want to look for the "Strat Pak". It is the guitar/amp and cord combo. Usually runs from anywhere around $149.00 at Samash.com or $149.00--$299.00 depending on style at musiciansfriend.com.

This is a guitar pack that will grow with you. It's worth the extra $ compared to the Wal-Mart guitars which sound bad. Plus, from 10 feet away it looks like a Stratocaster. I play in a professional band and have played for years in the punk music world and most of my guitars get thrashed at the shows. I only play Squire or the middle Fender the "Mexi-Strat". I wont lose sleep over a flying skateboard busting my Mexi-Strat, but layoffamyastratmudda#@*aaaa.

Depends on your style of music a lot. You should find a guitar instructor that can help you and show you at a shop how the different styles sound, and what you can do with them, how well they stay in tune, etc. Also, getting an electric it is critical that you start with a good amplifier, not the cheapest. This is another thing you will have to 'test drive' many to find what you like for effects, quality, price, etc. Make sure you try them out together, and if you buy one first, like a guitar, then take it with you to test amplifiers.

What kind of music do you play? what kind of sound are you looking for? Personally.....I have liked playing different Ibenaz guitars,, yes they are japanese, but the sound quality is good, The frets are layed out nicefor a good fast sound, and the quality is good for the price.....spend your cash on the amp....and pedals......

fender and gibson both have affordable guitars in their special series. i think they are all made by epiphone, but they play ok. try out a bunch of them tho, some play better than others.
