The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency by Tom Ogg, Joanie Ogg,
* Start Your Own Specialty Travel & Tour Business by Entrepreneur Press
* Start Your Own Travel Agency by Adam Starchild
* Home-Based Travel Agent, 5th Edition by Kelly Monaghan

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Analia, you are right. Trade shows are an antiquated method of pitching a business, unless your audience is a bulk buyer, i.e. someone who might purchase dozens of tickets for executives traveling to South America. But if your customers are either companies that need travel arrangements less often or consumers you should be looking online for your best sources of marketing. You might consider writing a travel blog about great finds in South America. You might consider filling your site with amazing photos of special, out of the way places. You might consider generating some top 10 lists: best small hotels, best shopping markets, biggest rip-offs. Be creative. The point: Buyers who don't travel to South America all that often are looking for help in planning the best trip for their investment. The good news is that all travelers are terrified of wasting their time and money. You can use that fear to your advantage by guiding them with your services. In addition to your own website, I would urge you to create a Facebook page for your business and to consider search marketing on various sites. These days, most vacationers start their journeys with a search. Find the key words that will help your business stand out -- this will take testing -- and use your marketing dollars more wisely that way. If you're squeamish about your own online abilities, there are plenty of firms that have built expertise in this area. But there are also scams, so be sure to meet them face to face.

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website.
