Hi I am a beginner in drawing.
Now I am practicing with oil paint on canvas, and recently discovered that I also like charcoal.
I was wondering If I could draw with charcoal on a canvas?
Thank's.

Charcoal on canvas looks great - use a workable fixative if you're going to paint on top, then you won't disturb the charcoal beneath.

But if charcoal is your final image you will have to use a couple of coats of good quality spray varnish on the canvas, fixative is not a substitute for varnish.

Please don't use hairspray - poor college students use this, and personal experience guarantees it will turn yellow!

well, charcoal as well as Pastels a re better used on a Canson paper, now for a preliminary drawing it may be OK,i don't recommend it on canvas, but you may try, just remember it if you do use charcoal then even sprayed it is quite sensible to being touched so you'll have to frame or put a permanent glass on top of it to conserve your paining.

yes..and belive me it gives you a lot more flexibility than pencil or cryon on paper. the texture of canvas provides better results. use a fixative later to preserve your work.

Yes, I've done that but to have to spray it afterwords with something like hairspray I forgot what it's called.
