No, pirates did not wear make up. Historically, pirates were very dirty, smelly people. The reason pirates wear make up in movies is to make them seem more romantic than they really are. Would you want to see Johnny Depp unbathed, with bad teeth, dirty hair, raping, pillaging, stealing, murdering, and causing various illegal forms of havoc?

I wondered about this too, but as I remember Errol Flynn didn't wear any when he played a pirate, so why does Johnny Depp need any ?

Probably. They're so swashbuckling cool that they might as well have. Especially if it includes any extra eyes painted on their faces. LOL. ;-)
