im assuming your using a usb printer? If so when you first plugged it in did it try installing anything?
Goto the manufactor's website and find a download for your printer. I would then remove any printers you have installed on your computer unplug it and reboot. Then plug the printer in ignore any windows that popup to install and use the drivers you downloaded. Keep playing with it you should figure it out just takes a bit of time. If you need goto start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> device manager then remove any printers there also.
Good luck

Check the power cord. Check the connection cable. Shut down the computer, turn off the printer. Turn on the printer, start up the computer.
Still no connection re-install the driver. Download from printer website.
Call printer tech support.
Call the geek squad or there is another company I've heard advertised... Make it Work.
Good Luck!

Make sure the printer is hooked up and then install the drivers. If that doesn't wor, try buying a new cable for the printer. You should be able to hook up a USB cord to it which actually works better then the old cables.

There are few models of even popular brands which needs their exact Company Driver to be loaded even in XP, there driver isn't present in the database of XP.
Try downloading Latest Driver of your Model (Printer Model of course) & install it, restart ur system. Is the problem still there.
