After visiting the one here, the only reason I can come up with is that a large majority of folks that shop there actually HAVE fleas. That or other problems related to inbreeding. Any thoughts?

Flea market comes from the French marche aux puces, a name originally given to a market in Paris. The fleas were thought to be in the goods, because they were of the kind to attract vermin. The earliest English use we have found dates from 1922.

I think because so many people gather to one place, it looks like a bunch of fleas when viewed from afar

probably because the stuff you are trying to sell has been sitting so long, it could have flea's in them, or other varments
