It's pretty much an excuse to not legalize. In my sociology class we discussed this, and found that there has been no hard evidence to suggest that pot really is a "gateway" drug.

Some scientists and counselors believe that people who try pot are risk takers and will venture on to harder drugs. Some pot users do get into harder drugs but most folks I know that smoke pot never did do any other drugs. I believe this is one of many BS excuses not to legalize.

They basically just do it to say to scare parents. Its half true though. It's kinda cheap actually because think about it. Marijuana is like the first drug anyone trys (besides alcohol for the most part) so people say "oh he started off with marijuana, now he's doing coke" or whatever. I mean who goes straight to heroine without doing weed first. So its a cheap attempt at scaring people away from the grizzle. Not entirely true. calling weed a gateway drug is more of a loophole than anything else.

That propaganda has been around so long the establishment has begun to believe it themselves. The theory is that you will want a bigger and better high. The problem is those that make the rules do not really know anything about it from personal experience. I used it for a number of years for recreation and to alleviate my painful arthritic knees, and back. Unfortunately the push for employment drug testing has taken this away from me. Now I have to take the "prescription" narcotic painkillers that are legal. It just doesn't make sense.

Do you remember when you first started? It was really cool right? and now years later its still alright - but it doesn't excite you like it did at first. Just like new lovers some people are not loyal because they want that "newness" - hence it is the gateway drug... like your first timer. By the way - it can cause depression so be careful not to get into another drug to "cure" that symptom.

Statistics will show that it is a "gateway drug", but it seems that legalizing it for pain relief for cancer victims is a reasonable approach.....it seems that the risk is definitely worth it in cases such as these. Otherwise, it would be better to stay away from it. If something is not beneficial, stay away from it...people, drugs, food, etc.

I would say the gateway was more by having it illegal. As it is buyers are exposed to the other items drug dealers happen to be selling.

Because most people who use marijuana have addictie personalities and tend to go on to use and abuse other drugs; including alcohol. As you stated "once or twice" you have used other drugs. WIth many people once or twice on other drugs is enough to get them hooked.
