TURN OFF THE FURNACE , THE SWITCH WITH THE RED PLATE ON IT, AND CALL A FURNACE MAN. THE FURNACE NEEDS CLEANING AND A NEW NOZZLE.
DON'T RUN IT UNTIL YOU HAVE THIS DONE!!
THE SWITCH IS USUALLY AT THE TOP OF THE CELLAR STAIRS, OR IN A PROMINENT LOCATION...

Oil Burner Smoke

The black soot is a symptom of an incomplete burn. The oil nozzle could be partly clogged but this will usually cause a lean burn (oil starved), not a sooty burn. You could have a rusted out heat exchanger. You could also be starving oxygen to the burner. This will cause a sooty burn.

If you do not feel confident in your own abilitys in fixing this unit you should definately contact someone who is. Shut it down until you make it right.

And I advise anyone who still uses fuel oil or natural gas as a heat source to spend 10 bucks at Wal-Mart for a carbon monoxcide detector.

All chimneys, whether oil, coal or wood, have what's called a flew. There is a leaver or handle for this. You need to open the flew. Most are standard with the handle going strait up and down for open. And side to side for closed. You adjust it so the oil burns slower ( causing some smoke to back up ), or faster- when you open it)

If this does Not work, then You may have a problem with the oil entering the burner too quickly. If adjusting the flew does not help, you really should call a tech.

Hope this helps!

Yep man, black smoke is furl smoke.. Your not burning all of the fuel.. Look at your car. It could be just a matter of a simple turn of a couple screws or changing out jets. Could also be your ING. system.. If your ing. system aint up to par, then it can't send a strong enough sprak to burn the fuel.. Weak coil tends to do that.. So will fouled out spark plugs, or the wrong plugs for the engine. Bad plug wire or 3 would also cause it.

You probably have a bad or clogged injector or nozzle. Call the service tech to be sure though.
Usually the black smoke means not burning all the fuel.

Black smoke is gas; white or pale blue smoke is oil.
