I was in a car accident in 2001, hit on the left side of the car (driver side) I was not driving, airbags went off and car was totatled, so now I get back spasms on my lower left side and some times my whole left side is very tight and sore, when I do really hard lifiting like yardwork or working out at the gym the next day I'm in pain. but I just want to spasms to stop, so I can have a normal day and not walk hunched over.

Most of the time I'm fine and can do everything normal, it just sometimes this happens, and its been in the last year or so that I get spasms and now that I think about if I never went to PT just saw a chiropracter, I have knee problems too but that has nothing to do with my back,

I can so relate to you!! I was t-boned in 1983 and once in a blue moon I can not move myself with my legs to save my life.

hurts that bad for 1 or 2 days then it goes away

but I found that if that happens I can crawl on all four (hands and knees just find with out major pain and it is a safe way to work the back too if you got one of them days whn walking is not a n option at all. Any fast twisting, not a good idea! or lifting when tired do that when fully rested. do not weqr tight confining clothes that seems to irrritate the problem well for me it does.
I love giving my kids rides around the house on my back when we are playing horsey they are 4 and 5 on good days I do on bad I crawl cause that is the only way I can move with out pain in the house!! I do not go out this way at all.

the second day if I can stand I might take baby steps but my back will tell me very sharo gab that I took a big step to far and over ther next 3 to 4 days it fades to nothing when I am out in the cold and I am warm or heated up to a point of tired around the hips
then the next day is just like you said. there is no way around that but what I do every night while watching tv if I want to head to the kitchen and I am lazy I will crawl there LOL
it is fun and it builds your back, leg and arms up in the process
I know it is not the cleanest on the hands and knees but it is your home!! have fun cawling around.

Well
Though sciatica is a common problem, it is really surprising that often it is hard to tell why a person suffers from this ailment. This is why it is often referred to as a back pain complex. Even experienced doctors find it difficult to pinpoint a cause. Number of medical conditions lead to sciatica such as stress and trauma at any point on spinal cord or lower back. This is understandable but when a person feels this pain and the underlying causes are as general as obesity or pregnancy, it presents a vague picture to the doctor. There can be many more underlying causes that require supervision and treatment at the right time.

The best cure is to gently stretch the affected area and allow the spasm to release. Try lying on your back on the bed or the floor and pull your knees to your chest and just relax in that position....slowly rock side to side (like a egg). To prevent these spasms make sure you are using proper body mechanics when you are doing yard work or working out. Increasing the strength of your abdominal muscles will help support your back and prevent spasms.

Try to strech your back before you starting woring, you can also use a 98 degree bath to settle any spasm in your back. if you could get your hands on biofreeze that would be awesome the stuff is better then any creams i've ever used before, contact your physician and see if you can get yourself some it penitrates deep into the tissues to help relax them.
good luck and I hope you find some relief.

Hate to say it.. exercise. Low impact. I have knees both with arthritis. The doc said a recumbent bike is the best. I at times have had knee spasm and found the the peddling helps get rid of it.

I agree with the person who said you should get to PT. They can help you learn to avoid the motions that will irritate the area and build up other areas to take the strain.

Advice - watch your weight and the old thing about lifting with the legs is nto to be ignored! I'm dealing with two steel rods holding my spine together and learnign to re-do a lot gave me the ability to ride a bike again - just listen to the PT and if they don't help find another!

you must sleep on a good mattress without any pillow straight on your back. and since you have been in this accident please give up lifting uncomfortable weights because when badly hurt body needs time to heal...if you continue lifting weights you may never heal your body. instead of going to gym just walk for 1 hour works equally well and will not hurt your back. its sad to say but you should not do any kind of work that stresses your back. if you have any reiki masters in your circle visit them for healing.

place your legs on the couch and rest the back on the floor as that helps relax the back and so thats good also try some leg lifts and stomach exercises just dont over do it till they get used to it and that helps take the load off the back a little

damp heat and massage.

Then you need to strengthen your back muscles.

But I suggest you see a doctor or chiropractor.

Good Luck
