It's possible, and I wouldn't be so quick to say "I doubt it." See the United Nations was formed after World War 2 to prevent another World War. And its not just because of the Middle East, this isn't enough to fuel a World War, its the other nations challenging peace as well, such as North Korea. But you know how the saying goes, "If there is going to be a WW3, then WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones." ..I believe Einstein said that.

not for a good few years yet, if it's coming. if/when it comes, the war will center on oil and will stem from china's exploding industry and need vs western influence on middle east reserves. so .. if you're speaking of the israeli/arab conflicts at present, then no - ww3 will occur if one of the 'big 5' nuclear powers feels painted into a corner and decides that it can survive initiating a first strike. the technology advantage more or less guarantees that the west cannot be defeated in a conventional war.

my bet on that is china, 5-10 years down the road.

It wouldn't surprise. Not to sound apocalyptic or like a religious zealot, but the state of the world is in decline. People are full of hate and uncertainty. People are greedy, scared, and reactive. There's a consuming lack of compassion and understanding. War is inevitable.

Let's hope (and write our representatives) not. Although it might be a good way for us to sneak out of Iraq. "Sorry folks, we've got another problem. Gotta run now. Let's do lunch someday..."

And it is about damn time too. If we can just get a few million humans killed off the temps will hopefully go back to normal.
