I would like to bring my friend with me on our family vacation from the US into Canada this year. What kind of documents do my parents need to have to cross the border with my friend and I ?

You may need notarized permission from your friends parents, if that friend is under 18.. Passports, no matter where you want to travel in the world are always best. Even so, your friend, if under 18 years old will need to have that notarized letter from her/his parents. No passports? All of you will need to provide proof of American citizenship. This can be in the form of driver's licence with photo ID, birth certificate, or any other valid photo ID.
Here's a link to the site you'll need, for reference.

I hope you enjoy your stay.

Hmmmm, a passport is fine. If you don't have a passport... right now a driver licence will do... but not after 2008. After 2008, you will require a passport to cross the border. And also, you'll need some proof that indicate your US citizens, such as... US residential card, birth certificate, photo ID.... etc.

If your friend is under 18 she will need a note from her parents along with photo ID and birth certificate.

Birth certificate/passport/photo ID of some sort with your birthdate on it. Leave your guns at home.

I think you should telephone the nearest Canadian embassy and ask what is required, rather than taking the advice of strangers on the internet and risk being turned away at the border.
