A window unit is probally r-12 and almost impossible to get. If it's r-22, put your yelow hose to the tank of freon, put your blue hose to the charging valve. Charge until you reack about 70-75 lbs. or until the low side line feels like a fresh beer right out of the frig. Good Luck

Window Air Conditioner Freon

It is against federal law to work with refrigerants without an EPA license. You cannot buy the special tools and equipment required to work with refrigerant without a license.

Are you sure that you need refrigerant added to the unit? The first thing that people think that is wrong with an air conditioner is that it is low in refrigerant but in most cases this is far from the case.

The units in most cases are either not properly installed and sealed in the window or under sized to the " heat load" of the room.

The best test that you can give to any sized a/c is to take it's temperature. You run it on high and check the temperature of the air going into the unit and check the temp. coming out. There should be a 20 degree or more difference between the input air and the output air. If you are getting that difference the unit is working to it's fullest. If not then there could be a blocked condenser (outside coils) or a blocked evaporator (inside coils) or blocked or dirty filter. Then if you cannot find the problem you can suspect a low refrigerant charge or a sealed system problem.

Gonna involve taking the casing off. Can be very difficult depending on the brand and model. A fedders unit i worked on once was encased in a shell that could not be taken apart. The tray with the coils and compressor had to be slid out the front.

Once you have it open, youll need to see if it even have a valve to attach the gauges and filling equipment. If it doesnt (and many dont), call a professional to install one. If it does, check what kind of freon it uses.. If its the old stuff, pack up and head to mexico because it cant be purchased in the U.S. anymore without a liscence. If it isnt, well go get the equipment attach it to the valve and follow the directions. Remeber an overfull system will perform far worse than a slightly underfull one.

One thing to consider is the price of just replacing the thing. If your low on freon, you mgiht have a leak somewhere which is expensive to fix. If its just not cooling, the compressor may be worn out and leaking internally.

At best the coils may just dirty. Clean the outside ones with a garden hose (spray directly into them so you dont bend any fins) the inside coils will be harder to clean but if you leave the unti off for a while (to let it dry out) sometimes a good strong vaccum cleaner can suck some of that dust and crap out of the coil.

If it isnt just dirty coils, youd likely be better off just buying a new one.

hope it helps and good luck!

Just take the outer box off and give your coils a good washing with the garden hose. DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE! Just let the water flow out of the hose, if you spray it too hard it will bend the coils then you really will have to buy a new one. "Freon" actually hasn't been used for years. The refrigerant that her unit probably uses is R-22, which is pretty typical in those units. I have made more money off these people who had a friend who was an apartment maintenance man, that just threw some more "freon" in the system.

RE:
How do you add freon to a window unit air conditioner?

best to call and ask an air conditioning specialist. Our company doesnt like for owners to attempt and change their own freon. First of all it will most liekly void any warranties, and second of all you have to be epa cerified to handle and dispose of freon properly or there are hefty fines if your caught.

It is cheaper and easier to just buy a new one unfortunately. Because a licensed HVAC person is the only person that can deal with the freon. Good Luck

You have to go to a air-conditioning supply store. Get what's called a piercing valve, it goes on the cool feeling line on the compressor, sometimes it's the bigger of the two lines going to the compressor. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the r-22 refrigerant it takes some form of credential to controll the availability of such solvents, due to the use of this stuff in the manufacturing of "METH". Good luck !!

You must have a license to buy freon, if you don't, then you need to call a licensed AC person to do it for you.
