Current Players: Men (Roger Federer); Women (Justin Henin-Hardenne). It's all about the slams, and these two have more recently than anyone else. I know Serena Williams has won seven, but she hasn't played much over the past couple of years.
History....always tough and you can make cases for many. I'd go with Chris Evert for the women, the only player in history man or woman to win 90% of their matches for a career....that's unreal!! She also made the semfinals or better in grand slam tournaments 52 of the 56 slams she played. She won 18 slams and was runner up another 16 times!!! She played 303 tournaments won 157, and she at least got to semfinals 270 times, that's amazing also....the word that you use with Chris Evert is consistency, 18 straight years and ranked in the top 4.
Steffi Graf won 22 Grand Slams, Margaret Smith-Court won 24 Grand Slams, and Martina Navratilova with 18 Grand Slams are right there in the conversation for best ever as well.
The men; I would say Rod Laver, he won the Grand Slam, not once but twice. Talk about an amazing accomplishment. Also Pete Sampras is up there with 14 grand slam championships, and Andre Agassi only one of 5 men ever to win the career grand slam. Agassi is the only one who did it on 4 different surfaces (Rebound Ace, Grass, Clay and Hardcourt)

The best male, now and ever, is Roger Federer. I've watched tennis my whole life and have never seen anyone turn the game into an art like he does. I love watching him play and love waiting for his next "stroke" of genius. He is well on his way to breaking Sampras' slam record of 14.
Among the women, Justine Henin-Hardenne is the finest player currently. She combines a strong game (and maybe the best backhand ever in the women's game) with excellent fitness and a strong mental approach.
The best woman ever is Steffi Graf. In her prime, she was unbeatable, and had the finest serve in the game, and the best forehand killshot in the history of the women's game. She won 18 slams. Incredible!

I think best female tennis player in history is between 3 women,Navratilova,Graff, and Crissy Everett. However,i also think that if Monica Seles didn't get stabed would have been right up there. The men,Sampras, and Rod Laver.Currently, the best female player has to be Mauresmo, and male player has to be Federer.

I'd pick Navratilova for the women, in a close race over Billie Jean King and Margaret Court Smith.
For the men, it's a tossup between Laver and Federer. Roger needs to win the French.

Historically, I'd say Borg and Graf.
Currently, on the mens side, it's definitely Federer.
On the ladies side, I have to say Henin-Hardenne. She's made the finals of all 3 Slams thus far, winning the French Open in the process. That demonstrates she is capable of winning on any surface.

Hard to pick anyone over Federer and I've been watching tennis for 40 years.Maybe clay is his achilles.Women Navratilova. She took fitness to an artform. This is why she can still play championship caliber after all this time.

I do think, though, that by the time Federer is said and done, he'll be considered the GOAT. It's just premature to say it now, because he's only 24.
