Actually first the Europeans paid a better price for the gold than the arabs who were buying the gold before the Europeans discovered the sea route to the Gulf of Guinea and the Gold Coast as they named these places. The Ashantis in particular wanted to sell their gold for money and other goods, but it got a bit out of control and gold led to an escalation of wars as the groups who had gold in their lands got more guns. Also more guns meant more slaves, something the Europeans also wanted to buy from Africa, and slaves were supplied by the African kings themselves from the prisoners of various wars. The history of Ghana, ex-Gold Coast, is fascinating as it's a history of power, gold, slavery and strong Kings, later a history of Pan-Africanism (under which policy gold was nationalised, don't forget Kwame Nkrumah) and then privatised under the dictatorship and World Bank conditionalities. It's not a story of outright theft, it's a story of powerful Kings, European traders, military men and later on the World Bank, and the multinational gold companies such as Anglo-Ashanti. One day gold will bring much needed cash to ordinary Ghanaians, but that day will have to wait until ordinary Ghanaians become conscious of their past, present and possible futures, poverty has to stop first!!

The people of ghana didnt really realise the value of gold and therefore were happy to exchange it for alcohol and guns. So it started off as trade and the white traders eventually came in ,bought lanf and started mining, using ghanaians as labour.
So it was more of cashing in on ignorance rather than theft.
