turned on the cpu one morning and that's the message i got

That means that Windows itself is corrupt and unable to load. Best thing to do is a reinstall of XP.
But the XP CD in your CD drive and boot up the computer
The XP set up should begin
After you have done the "F8" to agree, you will asked about formatting the hard drive
Tell to "leave the drive the way it is"
It will then reinstall the Windows system files without deleting anything off your computer

you've had crossed files that have been automatically repaired/deleted. You could start the machine in DOS mode, locate files that are marked file.000, file.001 etc, look at each of these files and try to determine the correct name for the file - but this would be a waste of time and effert. Just reinstall Windows.
