yes, on several occasions.

For example, when my son was little (about 8), I bought some Breyer's cherry ice cream....there was a small rock in the ice cream that my son bit down on and it caused him to lose a tooth...luckily, it was a baby tooth, so there was no permanent damage. I mailed the pebble along with a letter back to the CEO of Breyers with an explanation of what had happened. I did not threaten to sue...rather I explained that they might want to inspect their equipment so that someone else did not crack a tooth as the next person might not be so lucky!

We got a wonderful letter back from the CEO personally, apologizing to my son for the accident and a coupon good for $10 worth of Breyer's ice cream.

My more successful letters have had the following components:

1) They told a story...I explained why I was not happy or happy in very simple terms

2) I used humor...people seem to respond better when you make them laugh.

3) I did not demand a response (in the Breyer's letter, I did not ask for a coupon, threaten a lawsuit, etc. I merely suggested they might want to "play tooth fairy" for my son to make up for the loss of the tooth.

A good source ideas for letters - complimentary and otherwise is a book called "Letters from a Nut".

I have complained numerous times, but never gotten anything free. Of course, that is never my goal, I just want the companies to know how I feel. Something free would be nice for my time, though.

Yes, I complained to America West about a terrible travel experience, and they sent me a $150.00 voucher for another America West flight. However, they're so extremely bad that I've never used it. There's no point in flying an airline that can't get you there. They've merged with US Airways, now, anyway. I wonder if they're any better.

I used to work for a motorcycle company and when people wrote nice letters we'd send them stickers and stuff.
I've complained to about 3 companies about their product and they usually send gift certicates for more of theirstuff for free.

I did many times. Almost always got some "consolation." Last time was J.Crew, where a guy on the phone taking my order put me through so much, and messed up my order. They sent me a cute little leather picture frame that opens up with two frames in.
