Yes. I had many people tell me we went to Iraq for the oil. Yet we didn't take control of it...if we did we wouldn't have such high gas prices.

This Liberal never claimed it. I don't even believe it was Bush's idea so much as it was Cheney and Rumsfeld's. And those boys and their Neocon pals were planning it long before 9/11.

It's true these boys are Oil Men and Oil Men been running this country for a looooonggg time. Look at all the new legislation aimed at digging for more oil. *Oil conspiracy theorists* claim that we are in Iraq for oil. Liberals, on the other hand, are a broad group of people with likely as many different ideas about why we're in Iraq as any other broad group of people. The most general you can legitimately get with it is to say that many Liberals don't agree with the need to invade a WMD-less country with no connections to 9/11.

As with Conservatives, however, there are Liberals of every stripe. Every shade from the most moderate to the most extreme. To make a blanket statement like, "All Liberals claim [anything]..." betrays a profound ignorance of not only the topic at hand but also of human individuality. It's the sort of generalized (over)statement that ranks right up there with "All black people are lazy" and "White men can't jump." Just plain ignorant.

For example, I would consider myself far more liberal than conservative (especially in their "neo" forms) and, personally, I think we're in Iraq because:

1) Iran is sandwiched between Afghanistan and Iraq. By invading Iraq, the U.S. now has bases on two sides of Iran, just in time for a possible nuclear crisis/showdown. Surrounded!

2) Iraq's military was weak and it was a relatively easy place to gain a foothold in the region, so WMD evidence was invented (or cherry-picked). Of course, *holding* that foothold seems to have been more difficult than expected. On the other hand, "bungling" the post-war "peace" creates a dire security situation that is a great excuse for staying in the region for a long, long time (for the safety of the people, of course...).

Remember the difficulties the U.S. had at the beginning of Desert Storm in trying to secure staging areas in the region? Well... Now U.S. troops and equipment are occupying TWO countries in the region, and don't have to ask anyone permission to launch from or fly through either place should a major conflict arise. And, since both of those countries are right next door to Iran, there's no need to get permission to fly over other Arab and/or Muslim countries to get there. Problem solved.

This, of course, assumes that the U.S. knew for a while that Iran was angling nuclear-ward, and so have been playing some global chess in order to get us positioned for the coming conflict.

If not, then I don't know why we're there. It sure isn't because of 9/11 or WMDs...

Its entirely true we're in Iraq for Oil. Its a commonly accepted fact, as there we no Weapons of Mass Destruction, when we are positive that there are in other Countries, including our own. Its my belief that the U.S. is in Israel so they have a base to protect their oil interests.
