You mean "Mami"? It's not exactly a literal translation of "mommy", it's more of a nickname. I call my favorite uncle "Papi" but it doesn't exactly mean father, either. They're very close nicknames that Hispanics use for eachother.

Not really. It is a term of endearment because most Hispanics are Catholic and know that someday, those little daughters will be Mommies. I call my husband Daddy and he calls me Mommy. That is what we call each other. Have ever since the kids were born. That is my sweet theory anyway. :)

Have you ever heard a man say "Come to poppa" and the person or thing theyre addressing is not theyre offspring? I guess thats silly too. What about couples and people who call each other "baby." Maybe you shouldnt automatically denote something as "stupid" until you learn about it first. Millions of nicknames pet names terms of endearment that are weird, and 'mami' upsets you?

It is poor English on their part. We are not even allowed to say the word "mommy" in our family unless it is refering to a baby talking about it's mother. When a child is five years of age in my family they should already be saying mum, mom, mama, or mother depending on what language or speak you are using. Sometimes we even call our mother's by their actual names to keep our history and our names remembered. History and formality is of a great importance in my family.

Why do white people call their children sweetie and honey? It's a cultural term of endearment. "Mami" is their cultural term of endearment for their daughters. As long as they are not bothering you why should you care? Why do white people always feel like they're owed an explanation as to why different groups of people do things?
