I'm 14, entering high school this year, and am very interested in exchange studies to Japan. I need some sort of sponsorship or scholorship, though, or else I can't go. What kind of companies would be willing to sponsor a single individual? Or, should I just take shots in the dark and start asking companies and businesses in my area?

Major corporations and franchises are the hardest to get money from, so your best bet would be mom and pop stores.

If you have a photocopied letter from your guidance counselor on your school stationary it would go a long way to proving that it is legitimate (so they will give you money).

Ask businesses for a specific amount. Let's say you need $8000 total, ask each business for $100. They can always give less, but they will be more likely to give if you ask for a specific amount.

Look for businesses that are educational in nature, have a connection to japan, or promote travel. Then contract with them for a service. Let's say you ask the local travel agency for $200, tell them that in return you will write up a travelers guide for them to use based off of your experiences.

Ask the Lions/Rotary/Elk Clubs. They do a ton of good things for the community and are normally willing to consider it.

Finally, ask your Principal and members of your board of education. There may be money in the budget they can use.

Good Luck!

Absolutely ask businesses in your area. Businesses love to sponsor students like you. They know exactly where the money goes! Good luck and get out there and have a wonderful time in Japan!!!

You can start as small as having friends/family stand in front of businesses (with their permission) to collect money for your cause. You could also go as far as to write a "education plan" and presenting it to large corporations like McDonald's and Subway. They do a lot of community work so you might have a shot. Good Luck!
