Honda Civic.
As dependable as they come, great on gas, not a whole lot of muscle (if you don't get one souped up).
Quite possibly the perfect teenager car.
Good luck.

A Honda civic or a Toyota corolla or a Hyundai accent or a Mazda 3 would all be excellent choices as far as a first NEW vehicle as they all are super dependable reasonably priced starter vehicles and buying a new vehicle as opposed to buying a used one you get the new car warranty and being that it's brand new there will be no surprises that buying a used vehicle could and probably bring As most people know someone rarely sells a vehicle that is not giving them any problems, but if a used vehicle is more in your budget then check out factory certified used vehicles as they have to pass extensive scrutiny before they get that certified status plus all factory certified vehicles come with some kind of warranty.

Most kids these days want those cars from the fast and the furious and the best bang for the buck is a Honda and they are very dependable and very good on gas and they are small and easy to drive but you just want to make sure that the 60k mile maintenance is done on those cars because if the timing belt breaks the motor is done it isn't good for nothing but a boat anchor.

I wouldn't give any kid of mine any car.
Let him earn it.
I wasn't given a car & I'm totally warped!
Oh I guess that wasn't a very good example.
Anyway... many parents find their once responsible 16 year old becomes a real terror after being given a car.
My boss gave his 2 kids a total of 5 cars before they turned 18 because they kept wrecking them. They were also "responsible" before they received the free cars.
Now they are both 30+, he is still supporting them & still buying them cars.
Guess what?! His son tells everybody he hates his dad's guts! Both of the kids are really messed up.
I am surprised they are both still alive with as many wrecks they have had, driving drunk or under the influence of drugs, high speed races, banging gang members etc.
Good luck!
Ford Pinto if I HAVE to pick a free car.

What is your price range? What can you afford? Go with something in a color he likes that looks trendy and good on gas. Nothing too expensive--he is a new driver. Think about the safety features as well.

get him something cheap. I fit that same profile when I was 16, I got into 2 accidents before I was 18 (neither were my fault). His jay may not drop when he sees it, but he will understand sensibility. It was nice to be able to afford gas and insurance and still have money let over, while my friends whose paretns bought them fancy cars were broke all the time.

I was in a bad accident in a ford escort and escaped with no injuries so when my daughter was ready for a car I bought her a low mileage escort too. She would have preferred a ford mustang but I know she is safe and it has low mileage too
