I was recently making an essential oil liquid for moisturizer, and I noticed immediately that my patchouli oil smells really funky. I guess the best way to describe it is "rancid." Is this from oxidation? The oil is only a few weeks old and the expiration is 03/09. I store the oil in its original bottle and keep it air-tight in a dark drawer. Can I fix this any way?

Sounds like you contaminated it somehow. Toss it out and start with a new bottle.

Unfortunately, there is no way to fix it. Had you used any oil out of that bottle before, or is it possible that it was bad when you bought it?

Contact the company where you bought it and ask for a replacement. Explain that it smells rancid and that it is not even close to expiring.

If it happens again, you might consider changing suppliers.

if it is rancid, that is a chemical change - oxidation maybe.

I don't think you can do anything to filter it; and i am not enough of a chemist to figure out what could release the oxygen molecules if is is oxidation.

I don't think you can fix it.

Maybe try a different supplier?

Sorry but it's pretty much through, buy some fresh I'd try storing it in dark colored bottles a cool not extra cold refridgerator. It will help it last longer. ^_^

Once it "turns" there is nothing you can do.
