8 teams total. 4 from each league. The three division winners from each league and one wild card from each league.

Currently the number is 8 (division winners from the 6 divisions NL east, central, west, AL east, central, west, and a wild card from both national and american league).

Before the wildcard and the three divisions in each league (mid 1990's, there was only 4 divisions (NL east, west, AL east, west) and only the leader in each division went to the playoffs (total of 4).

And prior to that (1960's?) there was only NL and AL and the winner of each (total of 2) met in the world series.

The MLB playoffs consist of 8 total teams.
6 division winners (NL East, Central, West; AL East, Central, West), and two wild card teams, one from the AL and one from the NL. Wild card teams are the teams with the best record that did not win their division.
