I had that problem.
it was caused by other software.
I use RealPlayer. turning down the volume in that also reduced the volume for everything else.
go through all your software and turn up the volume.

With my laptop I have quad speakers built in and have to admit I have more volume than I can handle and usually can't have it to the max or I have people complaining from another room. Now a few things you might want to check if you have the ability - right click on your volume icon in the system tray to bring up the Audio Adjust Propreties Box and go thru those setting to make sure you have things set to max and have other settings to where you need them to be. Also - in the program (like your music program) even if you have your volume on your computer set to high sometimes if the program volume is set lower you can adjust it there too. Hope this has helped.

try going into control panel and click on sound and audio devices,
audio tab, and check the volumes for all the your components. If that doesn't work check the status of your integrated sound from your laptop by right clicking my computer, properties, and the hardware tab. click devise manager, and check the sound and video game controller and make sure each and every one of them that are present are running without trouble.

your integrated sound device may be getting old
your software files need to be updated
internal speaker wires may have came loose
speakers are blown out

if you have run all these test and find nothing wrong with the speakers, software, drivers, and wiring, then your sound card is most definitely the problem. If you are looking for cheap and loud sound for a laptop and you don't want to spend allot, there are usb devises that have a speaker connection, or for a little more you can get a pcmcia card that will plug into the slot of your notebook. I have the same problem, but on a desktop. And I know it's not just "the way the computer is," because yesterday the sound was fine. I am listening to it, now, at a volume of 76, and the level of loudness is equal to what I usually hear when it's at a volume of 18. I desperately wish I had a solution! ):

If your laptop has an analog volume control make sure it's turned up all the way. Next double click on the volume control tray icon(if you have one) and make sure both the Volume Control and the Wave sliders are all the way up. The Wave slider gets overlooked easily.

make sure no apps have the volume down.
check speakers in system devices.
laptops are not known for good sound, best i have heard is Toshiba with the Harmon Kardon speaker set up.
Try a pair of creative labs external speakers, cheap, and good sound if all else fails.
