~Actually, Russia is not the former Soviet Union. It was only a small part of it while the USSR existed. The USSR was a democracy. Russia is a democracy. The US is not a democracy, it is a republic. One should understand one's terms and know one's facts before posting a question. As to how effective a democracy Russia, or any of the other former Soviet republics can be, that is another question entirely. However, since Georgie the Younger has tried to dupe the world into thinking Iraq and Afghanistan can experiment with "democracy", and people actually bought into his bull before the invasions, I suppose anything is possible.

This is going to seem odd, but, in many ways the Russians and the former Soviet Socialist Republics were more democratic than the United REPUBLICAN States of North America ever were.
The USA thinks of itself as a Democracy but it is not. It is a Republic. A different political beast of a different colour and pattern
Even the soviets realize that they are not in control, just look at the recent news of unrest and rebellion in the former empire.

Technically, Russia is a communist country. Nevertheless, since their system of government lead them to economic woes, Russia is now adapting some forms of free trade and capitalism just like China in order to survive.

If I were still alive............
I would have cut through the world like a knife through butter. The weak would have crumbled beneath me and I would have transformed the world into greatness. I would have eliminated the gap beneath the rich and poor by controlling all the costs and retails of all goods bought and sold. I would have provided the people with jobs, health care, religious freedom, and strict laws and punishment. People would have been given everything they needed to make it in life and in return they would work in the government run business world. Everyone would have a role in the world and everyone would have to help out. Oh it could have been glorious.

I agree with you. They now have a capitalist system but they have a long way to go to be a democracy.
