I've actually researched this and not even the best scientists really know. when you yawn, you receive more oxygen to the brain. my theory is that when someone yawns, the power of suggestion subconsciously reminds you that you need to yawn and get that extra oxygen. Not only does this work amongst humans, but it's often been observed among primates, too.

This is a highly debated issue, but I think it deals with air pressure.

When you yawn, the air pressure in the room changes, so others must yawn to neutralize their ears too.

Its weird.

the in basic terms agreed upon theory is this 'contagion' of yawning has a function of syncronizing the sleep of co-habitating kinfolk. possibly it guarantees that minors requiring supervision sleep at the same time as the adults sleep, or that each and each one wake and sleep jointly to maximise their means to assist one yet another. it is 'herd' or '%.' instinct.
