It's about some people giving the singer drugs. The verses in the songs are the people talking to him ("Hello? Is there anybody in there...") and then giving him drugs ("Relax... Just a little pin-prick... I do believe it's working good. That'll keep you going for the show. Come on, it's time to go.")
Then the choruses are the singer's thoughts as he drifts into his highs ("When I was a child I had a fever... Now I have that feeling once again... I have become comfortably numb...") When he becomes "Comfortably Numb" the drugs have taken their effect.

When you get to a state of mind where you're "happy" with being numb to the world. Usually, but not allways, manifested by drugs. Some people, including myself, when dealing with a loss that leaves you feeling emotional pain you want to find a way to escape and the easiest rout is with drugs. When your high or drunk you numb yourself pain goes away but it's not gone its just being put under the bed for awhile. If you deal with the pain with trying to escape it it will make you a stronger person.
It could also be a way of describing depression. When depressed you do have a sense of things having no flavor or feeling.

It's about the singer bein given heroin just before a show, hence it is the most powerful of opiates, in which they don't exactly numb you, but they do KILL pain w/absolute certainty.. Anyway, people walk into his room & find him so balled up from withdrawals & in much pain from them.. (Believe me i'm unfortunately heroin addict also. So i tune in with these lyrics perfectly..) Just a little in prick..(from a needle) There'll be no more harm... (Heroin is a major pain KILLER not reducer, but killer, it definitely takes away Amy pain but the nest part is your not actually "numb" & lose full motor skills, For ex. like a total anthesthetic would do.. Like lidocaine, benzocaine, or even cocaine would do.)
Can you show me where it hurts?
Come on, now, I do believe its workin good
That'll keep you goin for the show
(BTW herion IS a total downer & will make you nod out or put you to sleep without question.. But in smaller doses, or bein an addict w/tolerance, it actually gives you energy.

It kind of makes more sense in context. It's just part of the story of The Wall where the main character Pink goes on stage under the influence of 'numbing' drugs designed to help him play despite all the troubles in his life.

Comfortably Numb... when you get so tired of people trying to explain the lyrics of this song... that you become so numb fromit...you feel like you are once again a child with a fever/sick and you will need a doctor to give you some medicine to get you through all this bull.....

Have you seen the movie?
Well in the movie this plays in a scene where the main character, a rock star named "Pink," loses his mind and enters a catatonic state before a show. It was similar to what Syd Barrett went through in 1968 when he was kicked out of the band.

I'm not completely sure, but I think it has something to do with Syd Barret, one of the band's founders who recently passed away. He had lots of problems. I think I heard it was one of the first songs they did after Barrett left and David Gilmour joined the band. It was apparently done with much affection.
Off point, but ...There was actually a contingent of people in my hs grad class who were seriously committed to making "Comfortably Numb" our senior prom song. lol. It actually would've been pretty appropriate ;)

There is a painful childhood memory that is at the back of his mind, but he is taking drugs to numb out the feeling so that he can live his life, but he is always numb.

The song is from "The Wall" so it relates to the story being told -- I recommend watching it -- you'll get a different insight to all the songs.
It's basically about escaping reality and the problems it contains through drug abuse and/or mental breakdown...
