Hello,
TMAN correctly covered almost all of the standard small arms of WW1. A few more: The U.S. had the Colt 1911 automatic pistol in .45 cal. (12mm), 1897 Winchester pump trench shotgun, 12bore with hand-guard and bayonet mounting. Another German pistol was the Broomhandle Mauser which was an early 9mm semi automatic with the magazine in front of the trigger. (Winston Churchill had one) Russia had a .30 cal Nagant model 1895 revolver, and they also used Smith&Wesson revolvers, model 1871, 72s, and 74s in .44 Russian. (a popular target round after the war)
The Swiss had a Mauser bolt action known as a “Small Ring Mauser”, which was chambered in 6.5mm (6.5X55) based on an 1895 model, while the German Gewher was an 8mm. model 1898. The ’98 Mauser is still in production, and is being copied to some extent or another in almost all sporting bolt-action rifles made today. The ‘98 is generally considered one of the most important firearms ever produced.
Fun facts; The US .30 cal. (30.06) 1903 Springfield rifle was made under license from Mauser and the US paid Mauser royalties on each rifle made until the war started. The ’03 was equipped with a scope, and used in WW2 as a sniper rifle.
The Enfield chambered in .303 British, and the Russian Nagant, chambered in 762X54, were both rimmed cartridges, while all the rest of the rifles used modern rimless cases.
Mauser rifles were also equipped with low light bifocal optical sights “Lange Vizier”, and periscope sights that allowed the rifle only to be above the trench for firing. WW1 rifles were cut down into shorter K98 Mausers for use in WW2.
