A lot of my friends seem to have a fear of clowns. Why is this?

Good one! They are not my favourite characters either. At the mildest, I think they lack originality as a costume. They do not excite me at all! However, they can horrify people.

NOTE: "colorophobia" means fear of clowns.

I think if you were to see Stephen King's 1980s era movie called 'It', you might have a vivid appreciation of why some people have a fear of clowns.

It is my personal theory that "It" in the Stephen King horror movie is really the System, and that in order to deal with it one has to eventually tackle it hands on and not try to evade it, as the main characters try to do in the end.

I also think that "It" could be a Kinsmen clown or a Kiwanis clown. The Shriners also have a clown called Baba. They all look hideously gross to me. The Kiwanis clowns look like they are trying to entice people with their apples, that they sell locally around September. The apples that they sell could be like the apple in the Garden of Eden. These Freemasons seem to like to entice. I associate clowns with them. They are trying to conceal something.

To me clowns have gruff voices, and they often smell like toy gun powder or firecrackers. Their voices often are gruff, like at the circus, and they do not come over as people who like kids. Why do they feel they have to shake hands with the kids? The poor kids! Note the possible dangers of shaking hands with the wrong people ("stonecutters") if they prolong their grip, as in the scene in the movie 'Crash'. A higher ranking officer and a rookie cop shake hands in this movie. The senior and more powerful officer does not seem to want to let go, and the honest rookie cop then freaks out. Someone could do a big study on the issue.

Well, I was afraid of clowns when I was little, and still am afraid now, because of they way they are used in movies, as psycho serial killers.

Like in Saw, or the video game Twisted Metal, and many more evil clown movies.

There might be a mean person under the funny paint, and he might have a knife up his clown suit sleeve. He's just waiting for night to fall.

Their painted faces, bright clothing and weird actions are upsetting. No normal person would hide his identity like that. Also there have been serial killers who were clowns -- John Gacy was one.

i don't know. but, it's a double dipper. i don't know what the real person is behind a real face. i guess a clown is like a dream within a dream.
