I couldn't stand the early Beatles. When they became serious song writers and experiments with more cords and sounds they became the standard barer for rock music.
Besides David Bowie and Pink Floyd it's hard to imagine a rock group more innovative, more willing to push the bar than the Beatles during their time.

Because almost nobody would risk the incredulous stares of everybody else by criticizing your selection.
The Beatles are liked because they are liked. There doesn't need to be any real reason anymore.

What are you talking about? People don't like the Beatles because a lot of others do, they like them because...well...they like them! Makes sense to me.

it wasn't always. at one stage in their careers their records were broken and burnt by their fans because one of the beatles said that they were more popular than god. no-one wanted to say that they liked the beatles then. :)

They're immensely popular... had a couple dozen good hits, and are known the world-over.
Seriously, you could go to Germany, Russia, Canada, Austria -- there are fans everywhere. EVERYWHERE. I'm not a big fan myself, but I'm just in awe of how much influence they've had.
That's why.
Plus, they appeal to many different lifestyles and likes... soo...
That's why, too. =)

I guess it's because their music is so popular and nowadays what they sing about isn't so controversial anymore.
