Start when your clothing is brand new and only add 1/4 cup of bleach to your largest load and only wash whites with whites to obtain really white whites. OXY clean does not do well with already dingy clothes. I don't have a problem keeping my whites white with bleach in the laundry and I don't have to replace my clothes very often either. Have had the same white socks for 3 years. They look new!

if bleach and special detergents aren't working, you can go back to an old solution-
called bluing.

they still sell it at my grocery store.
It removes/hides the yellow in whites, which makes them look whiter, unless you use too much.

FROM Wikipedia

Bluing, laundry blue, or washing blue is a household product used to improve the appearance of fabrics, especially white fabrics. Used during laundering, it adds a trace of blue dye (often synthetic ultramarine, sometimes Prussian blue) to the fabric.

White fabrics acquire a slight color cast after use (usually grey or yellow), because they can never be cleaned perfectly. Adding a trace of blue color to the slightly off-white color of these fabrics makes them appear whiter. Laundry detergents may also use fluorescing agents to similar effect.

On the same principle, blueing is sometimes used by white-haired people in a blue rinse.

Bluing has other miscellaneous household uses, including as an ingredient in rock crystal "gardens" (whereby a porous item is placed in a salt solution, the solution then precipitating out as crystals), and to improve the appearance of swimming-pool water.

Bluing was most popular in the early to mid 20th century. Since then, it has largely been replaced by the use of bleach for its primary purpose.

Bluing is usually sold in liquid form, but may also be a solid. Solid bluing is sometimes used by hoodoo doctors to provide the blue color needed for 'mojo hands' without having to use the toxic compound copper sulphate.

Oxy-Clean. I swear by this product for cleaning everything. It's an enzyme based detergent that seriously boosts cleaning power. Bleach is ok for occasional use, but use half as much as directed on the bottle, and don't use the cheap stuff. Too much use of bleach over time will not only break down the fabric, but will yellow clothes.

Get an oxygen bleach like Biz or Clorax 2. Chlorine bleach will eat holes in fabric over time.

Use the bleach, but run it through the first agitation cycle 3 times before letting it complete itself out. My mom used to do that all the time for my brother when he was in football. I also think she used like powder dishwashing soap, but don't quote me on that... do the 3-cycle thing...it works great (and in my washers, in case your memory is like mine, just leave the lid up...it won't go past the agitation cycle with the lid up...).
