I am somewhat confused by the law. He is an adult, isn't that against the law for him to have sex with my daughter since she is only 17?

Well if the age of consent is 17 then technically she is old enough to make that decision according to your law, but if you want to press charges because she is only 17 then that's really up to you

Yes and not only is it against the law because he's an adult but you daughter can't even rightfully make the decision to have sex because she's under age. That kind of law protects teens from making a tough decision like having sex.

The age of consent is the age when the law says you can agree to have sex. In most countries it means until you reach this age you can not legally have sex with anyone, regardless of their age old. In the United States and Canada this is the same situation. Sometimes the law is different if you are female or male.

Why do we have these laws? Although many young people are mature enough to know how to deal with the consequences of sex, some teens are not grown up enough to know that their actions have consequences. Age of consent laws are there to stop young people from being exploited by adults.

It doesn't matter if you as her parent say it's ok for her to have sex in the eyes of the law this is illegal.

If its your state law that she is at the age of consent at 17 then theres really not much you can do Im afraid. You can sit with her and tell her how u feel and why you want her to think this over before she keeps having sex. Be honest with her- be candid. I know- from being a teen years ago! lol That no matter what if they are going to have sex theres nothing that will stop them! if u were to have this boy arrested you will be pushing your daughter even farther away from u and i just know thats NOT what u want! Be sure she is being responsible-condoms and is aware of the diseases! Be there for her when she needs u most! Thats a hard thing to do but Im a mom too and if i can do it anyone can!

No it is not illegal and even in other states no one will get involved in a sexual relationship between a 17 and 18 yr old only 1 yr apart. Your daughter also is not a child she is a young woman, it is time to develop an adult relationship with her. You daughter is also a young adult and at the same maturity level of an 18yr old. Instead of starting something with her this late in the game it is time to start accepting her views and decisions.

If the age of consent is 17, then your daughter is able to make that decision as long as she is "consenting". Unless your daughter was forced or she didnt want to have sex, then you really cant make an issue of it. Since you know she is sexually active, at least you can discuss these things with her and keep her protected. Good Luck.

I'm not quite sure about the age question but it does seem like you are an involved father which is great. What you don't want to hear but I'm sure you know is many girls are having at 17. At all costs get her on birth control and talk to her as much as you can. Do what ever you need to do to make sure she's safe and protected. You don't want to be a young grandfather!

No, if the age of concent is 17 and your daughter is 17 then according to state law she is legally able to make her own decisions as to her sexual destiny. Now if that were my daughter and she still lived in MY house she and I would have to talk about her relationship. I'm a bit of a dictator when it comes to my children, ESPECIALLY MY DAUGHTER.

At 17 your daughter should basically know right from wrong...Yes sex is wrong and is a mistake but he is only 18...only a year older than her. They think they are in love. All you really can do is get her on the pill so you dont get grandchildren and pray she uses a condom and doesnt get AIDS

Not if she's above the age of consent. You can't have him arrested and you probably won't stop the sex. Just be sure you sit down with both of them and discuss birth control, disease prevention AND the emotional consequences of a sexual relationship. Better safe than a grandparent.

I hate to say this, but it's normal for this to happen. In modern American society, 65% of girls loose virginity between ages of 16 and 18. 35% of those have lost virginity 15 or earlier. I guess the only thing you can talk to her about, is using protection and being safe about it.
