Bearing in mind the risk from "dumpsters divers" and other "identity thieves" -- but also considering that I might need my recent credit card and ATM receipts -- what's the best way to store these receipts. How long should they be kept?

I would keep them in respective files. A lot of times you get double charged for items. This happens a lot in the restaurant business and you need to prove this. I would keep them for two years then shred them and dispose.

I wouldn't hang on to them if they are not needed for tax/business purposes. I just bought a little shredder that fits over a recycling can. I now shred everything, then mix up the bag and put out for recycling just before the truck shows up.

If it isn't something I can take off my taxes and I haven't had any charges that month I burn them in my backyard. If I did use my credit card then I have a large locked box I file them in. Every six months or so I burn them too.
