Think again. African countries are rich, not poor and ignorant. The leader kings there are military and aristocratic dictators that take everything from their countries and peoples, including profits from resources, food, education, and outside aid, to keep the people poor and helpless. African countries don't let other countries take whatever they want. They sell their resources. The people starve and slave while the leaders reap all the benefits.
It is not the US and UN's fault, but if you want to make it our responsibility, we will have to go to war to overthrow every African country's government and establish a democratic republic in each one, where all the people will have a voice. And while we're trying to do this, you'll be yelling "US out of Africa."

Well, that would be great, except for the fact that the U.S. and other wealthy nations are in Africa mining their diamonds and exploiting their other natural resources--never mind withholding medication for HIV and AIDS. So it's not always a question of helping people out of poverty; it is rather a question of ceasing to co-opt their goods. Africa gets portrayed as so many negative things--and it is true that some parts of Africa are famine-ridden and therefore barely liveable--but part of the truth is always left out: that the U.S., the U.K., France, and other well-developed nations are in Africa benefitting off the spoils of the land and paying natives terribly low wages for their work. It is the same everywhere--not just Africa. I mean, like, the sweatshops in Thailiand, Cambodia, Vietnam. It is frequently a matter of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. And making people in the U.S. feel sorry for certain African nations while withholding information about our own agency in the state of affairs on that continent.
It sucks and it's unfair. Nothing new here.

"Give a Man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will feast for a lifetime."
This is something I have ALWAYS thought should be done in Africa. All the charities that send me seeds asking me to help - I actually put the seeds back in the envelope and send them back with a note, "Teach them how to use these, and provide them to the people."
These charities that provide food are not helping other than just making people dependent upon their being there to feed them. Not only that, but the majority of the charities use your money to fund more fund raisers (i.e. - your five bucks just paid for them to send more request for money to other people, rather than paying for food).
The best charity by far that I have found is Smile Train. Your money is 100% given to the goal of the charity, and the way it works is they TEACH and train people from that particular country to perform their own surgeries on kids that need help.
I believe any charity that does otherwise is a rip-off and isn't doing all they could do to TRULY help those in need. Education is the key. Period.

Ever hear of capitalism? =)
Adam Smith and the invisible hand...
Let's take it one step further...teach a man how to build a fish farm, and you'll feed the entire community!
The world police (the UN) probably wouldn't be too supportive, since they seem to be socialists! World Bank could get involved and provide low interest loans....but it would only be effective if the political systems in Africa could get it together.

Well, really the saying is, "teach a man to fish . . ." not give him a net. Both the UN and and US groups work to bring farming and education to third world countries.

thanks slug..."Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." I totally agree on this idea. The greater nations of this world have the responsibility to teach the lesser nations how to survive, but just giving them hand outs won't do any good.

They already do, though Peace Corp is shorted on funding.
In the US, if you teach some men to fish, they will stay on welfare so they can sit in a boat all day , drink beer and fish.

Yes I do believe that. Just because some countries are on the "higher end of the totem pole" doesnt make it better. All countries should unite together and help those that are less fortunate. There would be no wars. Just WORLD PEACE!!!
