I've found that my DSL service is just as fast and more reliable than the cable service I had before. And either is light years ahead of dial-up.

DSL can usually be purchased at various download speeds and the faster the more expensive. DSL speeds can be affected by several factors many of which you do not have control over such as the distance from your premises to the central switching office your DSL is provisioned from and the condition of the facilities that deliver the service including your inside wiring. Just because a company sells you a 3 MB DSL connection does not mean you'll actually be able to download at that speed. Unfortunately, the only way to know how fast a connection you can get is to have it installed and then test the speed. I recommend you order the fastest speed you can afford and if you cannot actually connect at that speed drop your package down so you are paying for the speed you are actually getting. Check with the internet provider, usually they will allow you to do this or even cancel completely within a certain amount of time after the installation even if you have a contract. Just be sure to test the speed often during this "satisfaction guaranteed" period and cancel in a timely manner if it doesn't work out. The advantages of DSL over cable is that it is a dedicated point-to-point connection and therefore more secure and reliable. Cable is a shared loop and you do not know how many are sharing that bandwidth and it will actually slow down during peak usage. Also, I can remember at least two or three times over the past year or so that my cable has gone out. My phone line and DSL connection have never failed.

DSL is much faster than dial up. Cable might be faster than DSL but no guarantees. And in my opinion, most people can't see a noticeable difference between DSL and cable, especially during the peak internet times of 6am - midnight.
Here in San Antonio I tried SBC Yahoo DSL (which changed names to AT&T Yahoo DSL), and I tried Time Warner Cable, and I tried Roadrunner. I went back to AT&T because it was cheaper than TWC and Roadrunner and I could not see any appreciable speed difference.

In my area: I have had both DSL and cable for about 3 years each. Here, currently cable is twice as fast on the download as basic DSL and costs the same (3mbps ... ~ 260-290k/sec on an actual download for cable vs 1.5 mbps DSL). Upload speeds are the same for both services.
both will make you do a 1-year contract for their current promotion to get the 'good price' vs month to month. just check the minimum speeds that each guarantees (ignore anything that contains the phrase 'up to' or 'potentially' or 'can reach speeds of') for basic service and get the faster one ... prices should be competitive, and neither one shines at tech support. cable does have the additional advantage of not having to be within a mile of a telco's switch, nor degrading service based on distance from same.

DSL and Cable are far faster than dial-up. I havn't had dial-up for years, I could never go back.
Cable is potentially faster, and usually is... but in some places, DSL is faster and more reliable. For regular surfing, there is no real difference at all. If you're used to dial-up, you will be blown away by DSL.
Get whichever is cheapest in your situation.

well, going from dial up to DSL is a big step up, but compared to my 6mb comcast cable internet you will still be slow..... but DSL is good enough for most online gaming, and surfing heck one of my buddies plays halo2 on xbox live with DSL.... so you should be ok

it can be sometimes it is slow because of the network hub or switch. if you get a mini base-t hub 16 port it can be somewhat fast. also it depends on you're ISP provider some good ISP providers are: local link, Quest smig and more. but in general DSL is faster than dial up.

I have DSL and I love it. It's pretty fast. I used it for online classes that included timed tests and quizzes. I have never had a problem with the speed. Good luck to you.

Dail up is the slowest. I hate dail up. I like DSL but hate having to sign in the internet, Cable, you are connected with the internet right away. i don't have no problems with high speed.
