It is true that many psychologists and psychiatrists enter the field seeking insight into their own problems and individual differences. However, it is unlikely that the general perception of weirdness comes from meeting such professionals. Most people never get to know a real PhD-psychologist or MD-psychiatrist. Most people's perceptions come from the entertainment business. This is not an impression informed by reality. Movies, and TV, and books are somebody's imagination. I think that it is often comforting to demean someone who is smart or who is feared to have secret knowledge that makes them powerful. Also, there is a literary archetype of the strange and crazy wiseman (or wisewoman) that gets worked into the public consciousness. Further, if "weird" just means "different" then psychologists and psychiatrists are very different. Psychologists are first of all scientists and psychiatrists are first of all physicians. After selection into college and then selection into graduate school or medical school or law school, and so on, you have only about one-half of one-percent of the smartest people in the group. That basically makes them very different. If good-different, such as being very smart, equals weird then everyone with an MD, or JD, or PhD is weird.

Psychologists are not doctors..Usually PhD.'s..And you know what that means: 'Piled High and Deep'!!!.. A weird animal in the study of the odd by the id. Or is it the ID by the ODD.?? It always made me feel good when I went to a Psychologist.. Maybe because when I left, I thought I was so much less screwed up than him.!!!

I don't know why people think psychologists are weird. As a psychologist myself, I have opted for not telling people what I do for a living, as they act strangely towards me once they find out.

I think a lot of people think that because of the way they are portrayed in the media.
Responding to Richy Rich: PhD's are doctors.

Because we are!! Who else would sit around hour after hour, day after day, week after week, year after year, decade after decade, listening to people's problems and act like we're interested for any other reason than to make money, or "fame and fortune". Only weird individuals do that. Thank God I'm retired. God Bless you.
