We went to see an apartment with a broker and liked it, we put an application in and later found out its a no fee building. They never mentioned this to us, do we still need to pay them a brokers fee?
thank you!

Don't kid yourself. That broker knew there was not a fee! He/she would have collected from you anyway. Unless you signed something with the broker agreeing to pay a finder's fee, then you have to even if the building does not.

You think the broker never worked with this building before? You are a very gullible person. You never trust anyone that their wage depends on you. A broker or Realtor thinks of their pocket too. And most of them think about their pocket before they think of your pocket...........Don't believe all the Century 21 ads you see on T.V.

Unless you signed a finders fee agreement with the broker you are under no legal obligation to pay him a fee. I seriously doubt the broker didn't know this was a "no-fee apartment complex...and if he/she honestly didn't know...well live and learn. On the other hand, I would talk to the landlord and if the broker indeed didn't get rewarded and if you appreciate his/her efforts---a small gift may be in order.

Strange that the broker did not know. Anyway, I think it is the right thing to do to reward the broker, in direct proportion with how long you've been working with him/her, with the brokerage fee being the max. He or she does not have to share it with their company. It could be a money or a present. If a present, it should be easily redeemable for anything, like a certificate at a good mall.
