its to see how could the reserves are, and to integrate new signings into the club. Also used for fitness purposes and extra cash. Going to the U.S or Asia for example brings in a massive amount of money which is what the game is about nowadays

Preseason this year about the non World Cup players a chance to have a run out before the season starts and the World Cup players to have a three week rest. Expect the season's friendlies in August to contain all first team player. Preseason friendlies are also a good way of the names of football teams around the world and selling their merchandise.

besides the reasons already listed the first team players have been involved in the World Cup this year and now need to have their time off.
This also happens in the other even years when the first team players have played in the Euros.
You will notice in the odd years the majority if not all of the first team do go on the pre-season tour because they haven't played in any tournament those summers.

The use of pre season tours and using reserves is to see whether a player in the reserves could affect next season for the better and to see who could be let go at the end of the season if they don't perform better. It is also so new transfers can intergrate themselves with the full team.

Generally managers already know how good their starting XI are, so they use these games to work on the reserves and subs, to keep the subs and reserves happy and who knows maybe someone may show they are better than a starter. Example:

Carragher V.S. G. Neville
Crouch V.S. Cisse
Van Nistlerooy V.S. Saha
Saha V.S. Trezeguet

Plus im pretty sure you don't want your star striker or starting keeper injured because of a pointless pre-season game.

For one it is all about getting the players fully fit for the upcoming season. It is also used to try out new formations and let all the squad members prove their worth to the manager.

It can also bring in much needed revenue for the clubs.

preseason games are just to get work in. You look to see who can be good subs. They are not meant to be won and you already know who your starters are. You want to be able to know how well your reserves can play and who you can count on.
