It's possible the port IM uses can be hacked into and also you could get a file through IM which has a trojan with a "back door" program that the hacker could access.

depends what you mean by hacked?

but no, no one can magically take over your PC because you use a messenger service.

Now what they can do is send bad files as already stated, OR more popular false links which then lend you to a webstie that'll D/L some nice lil bug on to your poor PC. Happens all the time (AOL is a big hit for this) people get infected by a worm n then the worms starts sending messages all over the buddy lists of the infected PC and the links are not what they say they are so www.freepuppy.com is really a link to MYDoom.

Don't click links sent thru any messenger window regardless by whom. just type the address in your browser window yourself AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT THE LINK IS FOR.
